The Thimbles Summary
Deep Work
The book in one sentence
The ability to focus without distraction on hard problems is becoming rarer just as it becomes more valuable, so people who train it and protect time for it will pull ahead.
Who it's for
Knowledge workers, founders, writers and managers who end busy days with full inboxes and little real progress on the work that matters.
The big idea
Newport, a computer science professor, splits work into two kinds. Deep work is concentrated effort on cognitively demanding tasks, done free of distraction, that stretches your ability and creates new value. Shallow work is logistical, easy to copy and usually done while distracted: email, routine meetings, admin. Modern workplaces push people towards shallow work because it’s visible and easy to measure. This creates an opportunity. In a fast-changing economy, the people who thrive can quickly learn hard things and produce excellent work at speed, and both abilities depend on depth. He sums up the logic in a simple formula: the quality of work you produce depends on the time you spend multiplied by the intensity of your focus.
