The Thimbles Summary
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
The book in one sentence
Lasting effectiveness comes from character, not technique: master yourself first, then learn to work well with others, and keep renewing both.
Who it's for
Managers, leaders and anyone who feels busy without feeling effective, and who is willing to look at their own habits rather than hunt for the next productivity trick.
The big idea
Covey reviewed two centuries of American writing on success and noticed a shift. Older writing focused on the character ethic: integrity, patience, fairness and hard work. More recent writing leaned towards the personality ethic: image, technique and quick fixes. He argues that quick fixes don’t last, because effectiveness grows from the inside out. The seven habits move you along a maturity continuum, from dependence (you look after me) to independence (I can do it myself) to interdependence (we can do it better together).
