The Thimbles Summary
Good to Great
The book in one sentence
Ordinary companies become exceptional by getting the right people in place, facing facts honestly and pushing steadily in one clear direction for years, without any single dramatic turnaround.
Who it's for
Chief executives, boards, senior managers and anyone responsible for lifting a solid, unremarkable organisation to a much higher level of performance.
The big idea
Collins and a research team searched the Fortune 500 for companies that had delivered stock returns at or below the market for 15 years and then, after a turning point, beat the market by at least three times over the following 15 years. Only 11 companies qualified, including Abbott, Gillette, Kimberly-Clark, Kroger, Nucor, Walgreens and Wells Fargo. Each was paired with a comparison company in the same industry that had a similar starting point but never made the leap. The book sets out what the winners had in common that the comparison firms lacked.
