Hackers & Painters
The book in one sentence
Programmers are makers, closer to painters than to scientists, and the habits of mind behind good software also explain startups, wealth and independent thinking.
Who it's for
Founders, programmers and curious non-technical readers who want to understand how technology people think and why startups work.
The big idea
Paul Graham is a programmer, essayist and investor. In the 1990s he co-founded Viaweb, one of the first applications to run in a web browser rather than on the user’s own computer, which let small businesses build online shops. Yahoo bought it in 1998 and it became Yahoo Store. This book collects his essays from the years that followed. They range from school and social life to wealth, programming languages and design, tied together by Graham’s belief that good work comes from makers with taste, curiosity and the nerve to think unpopular thoughts.
