The Thimbles Summary
Principles
The book in one sentence
Write down the rules you use to make decisions, test them against reality, learn hard from every mistake, and build an organisation where the best ideas win regardless of who has them.
Who it's for
Leaders, investors and anyone who makes high-stakes decisions and wants a more systematic way to learn from both success and failure.
The big idea
Ray Dalio founded the investment firm Bridgewater Associates from his apartment in 1975 and built it into the world’s largest hedge fund. Along the way he recorded the principles behind his decisions, refined them after each mistake, and eventually published them. The book has three parts: his life story, his life principles, and his work principles. The central claim is that most of reality works like a machine, with causes and effects that repeat, so carefully reasoned principles can be applied again and again.
The full summary continues with the five ideas worth keeping, three things to try this week, the 5-minute deep dive and our full verdict, as a PDF to keep.
