The Thimbles Summary
Mindset
The book in one sentence
What you believe about where ability comes from shapes how you handle challenge, effort and failure, and that belief can be changed.
Who it's for
Parents, teachers, coaches and managers who want people to keep going after setbacks, and anyone who avoids trying new things in case they look less capable than they’d like.
The big idea
Dweck, a Stanford psychologist, describes two broad beliefs about ability. People with a fixed mindset see intelligence and talent as set amounts. Every test becomes a verdict on who they are, so they protect their image by avoiding hard tasks. People with a growth mindset see ability as something developed through work, good strategies and help from others. For them, a hard task is a chance to get better. Most of us hold a mix, and the mix can shift depending on the area of life.
