The Thimbles Summary
The Mom Test
The book in one sentence
People will lie to you about your idea to be kind, so stop asking what they think of it and ask about their real lives and past behaviour instead.
Who it's for
Founders testing a new idea, product people running customer interviews, and anyone who has come away from a “great chat” with a prospect and then found that nobody bought anything.
The big idea
The title comes from a simple test. A good customer question is one that even your mother could not answer with a kind lie. If you ask your mum whether she would use your clever new app, she will say yes because she loves you. If you ask her about the last time she actually faced the problem your app solves, and what she did about it, you get facts. Fitzpatrick’s point is that it is your job to ask questions that make honesty easy, because everyone else in the conversation is trying to be polite.
